This book has been researched and compiled by the daughter of the late Carl Holmstrom, who was a POW for over two years after his plane crash-landed in Tunisia.
A talented professional artist, Carl sketched drawings of POW life & his fellow prisoners. After transferring to Stalag Luft III, he used his talents to help with the drawing of maps, forging documents & money for the now famous 'Great Escape'.
As the Russian army advanced in 1945, the camp was quickly evacuated. Instead of collecting up food for the long march ahead, Carl rolled up & took along all of his artwork.
Here now is a selection of those sketches and paintings, along with a selection created by other prisoners.
As a lover of reading POW escape stories this a very different book to those, but it is still a great addition to my collection.
Susan has spent many years researching, and it has clearly been a labour of love.
Available now from Pen & Sword books.
Welcome to the world of blogging Simon. Look forward to reading more.
