Pathfinders: The Definitive Story

In the past couple of years we had Will Iredale's excellent book on the subject.

Now this new book written by the Trustee of the Pathfinder Archive reveals even more of the story of the Pathfinder Force. (PFF)

The story of Bomber Command's issues with bombing accuracy are well known. The story of the PFF is lesser known to a certain extent, partly due to its commander's dislike of publicity at the time. Donald Bennett proved to be a difficult character to deal with, and would have an intense rivalry within Ralph Cochrane, the head of 5 Group in Bomber Command.

Both Bennett & Cochrane wanted the best crews, the best aircraft & equipment. Their paths would cross on many occasions, not least at the time of the forming of the Dambusters raid. This led to many heated arguments involving members from both sides including Guy Gibson.

As crews joined the PFF with different levels of experience the improved results were not immediate. But as the book explains, with time accuracy improved considerably.

I was interested to read that in 1944 Bennett was denied permission to assist Allied troops involved in OP MARKET GARDEN. As thick fog had grounded flights bringing in reinforcements & supplies, Bennett believed his crews had proved that they could of dropped much needed supplies onto drop zones 'blind', using the proven OBOE technology aboard his bombers.

His anger in being denied the chance is clear in this quote,

"The gallantry of our troops was magnificent; the support from behind was pathetic."

The book doesn't forget those brave men who flew in the PFF or supported them on the ground. Many stories of bravery & sacrifice are included. Other tales are laced with a touch of humour.

There is no doubt the difference that the PFF & all those involved made to the outcome of the war, often without the full support of the top brass.

This the first book of Sean's that I have read, it certainly won't be my last.

This is a fascinating & highly readable account, which will be a valued addition to my growing collection. It surely is a must read for readers & historians of Bomber Command, & indeed the war. Highly recommended.

*The book is now available from Pen & Sword Books, who I must thank again for this review copy.
